Xi underlines building professional forces at key meeting on public security

President Xi Jinping urged the nation’s public security forces to fulfill their responsibilities and missions in the new era to cr

eate a safe and stable social environment that enables people to feel an even stronger sense of security.

Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Cent

ral Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the remark at a t

wo-day national conference on public security work, which concluded in Beijing on Wednesday.

He called for building highly professional public security forces that are loyal to the Pa

rty, serve the people, promote impartiality in law enforcement and remain disciplined.

Under the new historical conditions, public security departments must

adhere to the overall national security outlook and a people-centered approach, Xi said.

If they don’t talk to us, we’re going to do something that’

going to be very severe economically,” Trump said. “We’re going to tariff a lot of their products coming in.”

Most leaders go out of their way to avoid antagonizing their counterparts and wading into their delicate domestic politics.

  Not Trump.

The exchange also revealed another one of Trump’s political tools: his fervent effort to inject an

appeal to his base — in this case on a signature issue, trade — into almost every political situa

tion.Trump also launched a mini-campaign rally, seizing on the Senate vote undoing his emergency declaration, to s

pell out his hardline policies on immigration and the wall — always with an eye on his most loyal voters.

In an interview published by Breitbart News this week, Trump revealed another aspect of his character — a sense

that he is being persecuted unfairly — that helps him identify with voters who feel neglected by political elites.

  Complaining about Democratic investigations, the

President made a jarring comment that hinted at the possibility of political violence.

hinese Vice Premier Liu He will visit the US on Thursday and

Friday to continue high-level trade negotiations. His new title as Chinese President Xi Jinpi

ng’s special envoy indicates the importance and authoritativeness of the talks. As pre

paration for the event, consultations at vice-ministerial-level between China and the US were recovered on Tuesday.

The world’s stock markets surged Monday due to the optimistic prospects on the deals that Beijin

g and Washington are expected to make. US President Donald Trump praised “big progress” in the

trade deal on Twitter. His words further stoked the stock markets of the US, which reached the highest in two m

onths and so increased pressure on the Trump administration to close the deal with China.

Analysts believe that if the two countries couldn’t come to an agreement, and as a result the US imposes more tariffs on Chinese prod

ucts while China responds with fiercer countermeasures, it would be a catastrophic strike to global stock markets.

In terms of avoiding such blows, the Trump administration is probably the most pres

sured. Thus in general, by the end of the trade negotiations, China and the US have become more psychologically equal.

Although the idea of Huawei engaging in espionage is te

ically possible, it does not make any sense from a commercial or political point of view.

Such a practice would be tantamount to suicide for a high-tech giant. If the Chinese governme

nt forced Huawei to do this, it would be stifling the country’s emerging industries. But intelligence can

not be mentioned in the same breath as Huawei’s contribution to China’s industrial prosperity and national interests.

Hyping the alleged Huawei threat has violated the basic spirit of seeking truth from facts. The West is prioritizing ide

ology and considering excluding China as political correctness. Many people in Europe are aware of the lies, but

still beating the drum for a certain value orientation rather than conducting an objective analysis.

The world is changing, and if Europe keeps prioritizing ideology and political correctness in dealing with every new situation, that would be dangerous.

What Europe needs is not only the ability to distinguish between right and wrong, but also the co

urage to make its own independent choices. Europe’s cooperation with Huawei on construction of a 4G

network is already an established fact, but it seems now that beneficial collaboration has become one of the biggest risks.

South Korea began paying for the U.S. military deplo

the early 1990s, after rebuilding its economy from the devastation of the 1950-1953 Korean War.

About 20 anti-U.S. activists rallied near the Foreign Ministry building in Seoul on Su

nday, chanting slogans like “No more money for U.S. troops.” No violence was reported.

“The United States government realizes that Korea does a lot for our alliance and peace an

d stability in the region,” chief U.S. negotiator Timothy Betts said Sunday in Seoul. “We are very pleased ou

r consultations resulted in agreement that will strengthen transparency and deepen our cooperation and the alliance.”

The deal, which involves the spending of South Korean taxpayer money, requires parliam

entary approval in South Korea, but not in the United States, according to Seoul’s Foreign Ministry.

The allies had failed to reach a new cost-sharing plan during some 10 rounds of tal

ks. A five-year 2014 deal that covered South Korea’s payment last year expired at the end of 2018.

Sun Qian had joined Guan Yu in escorting the two

Sun Qian had joined Guan Yu in escorting the two ladies, and they were on the road to Runan when

Xiahou Dun suddenly determined to pursue. So with a couple of hundred horse, Xiahou Dun set out.

When Xiahou Dun was seen approaching, Guan Yu bade Sun Qian go ahead with the carriage while he remained to deal with the pursuers.

When they were near enough, Guan Yu said, “In coming after me thus you do not reinforce the magnanimity of your master!”

Replied Xiahou Dun, “the Prime Minister has sent no definite instructions. You have caused

the death of several people, among them one of my commanders,

and so I have come to capture you! You have behaved most grossly. The Prime Minister will decide.”

thereupon Xiahou Dun dashed forward with his spear ready to thrust.

But at that moment a rider came up behind him at full gallop, crying, “You must not fight with Guan Yu!”

Guan Yu stayed his steed at once and waited.

the messenger came up, drew from his bosom an official letter, and said to Xiahou Dun, “The Prime Minister loves General Guan Yu for his

loyalty and honor, and fearing lest Guan Yu might be stopped at the various passes, he sent me with this letter to show when necessary at any point on the road.”

“But this Guan Yu has slain several commanders of the passes. Does the Prime Minister know that?” said Xiahou Dun.

the messenger said these things were unknown.

“then,” said Xiahou Dun, “I will arrest him and take him to the Prime Minister, who may set him free or not as he wills.”

“Do you think I fear anything you can do?” said Guan Yu getting wrathful.

And he rode forward. Xiahou Dun, nothing loth, set his spear

and prepared for battle.

they met and had reached the tenth encounter when a second horseman came up at full speed, crying, “Generals, wait a little!”

Xiahou Dun stayed his hand and asked the messenger, saying, “Am I to arrest him?”

“No,” replied the messenger. “Fearing lest he should have

difficulties at the passes, the Prime Minister has sent me with a dispatch to say he is to be released.”

“Did the Prime Minister know that he had slain several commanders on the way?”

 “He did not know!”

“Since he was ignorant of that, I may not let this Guan Yu go,” and Xiahou Dun gave the signal to his men to close in round Guan Yu.

But Guan Yu flourished his sword and made to attack them and a fight was again imminent, when a third rider appeared,

That I am glad to be an exile here in this wild southland

Liu Zongyuan

DWELLING BY A STREAM

I had so long been troubled by official hat and robe

That I am glad to be an exile here in this wild southland.

I am a neighbour now of planters and reapers.

I am a guest of the mountains and woods.

I plough in the morning, turning dewy grasses,

And at evening tie my fisher-boat, breaking the quiet stream.

Back and forth I go, scarcely meeting anyone,

And sing a long poem and gaze at the blue sky.

AT A BORDER-FORTRESS

Cicadas complain of thin mulberry-trees

In the Eighth-month chill at the frontier pass.

Through the gate and back again, all along the road,

There is nothing anywhere but yellow reeds and grasses

And the bones of soldiers from You and from Bing

Who have buried their lives in the dusty sand.

…Let never a cavalier stir you to envy

With boasts of his horse and his horsemanship

Wang Changling

UNDER A BORDER-FORTRESS

Drink, my horse, while we cross the autumn water!-

The stream is cold and the wind like a sword,

As we watch against the sunset on the sandy plain,

Far, far away, shadowy Lingtao.

Old battles, waged by those long walls,

Once were proud on all men’s tongues.

But antiquity now is a yellow dust,

Confusing in the grasses its ruins and white bones.

THE MOON AT THE FORTIFIED PASS

The bright moon lifts from the Mountain of Heaven

In an infinite haze of cloud and sea,

And the wind, that has come a thousand miles,

Beats at the Jade Pass battlements….

China marches its men down Baideng Road

While Tartar troops peess

across blue waters of the bay….

And since not one battle famous in history

Sent all its fighters back again,

The soldiers turn round, looking toward the border,

And think of home, with wistful eyes,

And of those tonight in the upper chambers

Who toss and sigh and cannot rest.
